Do you know a student who loves to learn outdoors? Applications are now open for Camp Woods & Wildlife, to be held June 20-25 at Holiday Lake 4-H Center near Appomattox. This residential, field-based camp is ideal for students interested in forestry, wildlife, or other natural resources. All students selected to attend Camp from Essex, King William and King & Queen Counties are awarded a $200 scholarship from Three Rivers SWCD. Campers are asked to pay a nominal $85 registration fee to confirm their attendance and acceptance of the scholarship.
Camp is open to anyone aged 13 to 16 (as of June 20) who has not attended before. Interested students may apply through April 15. (Please note that the application form includes a nomination from a non-related adult, and the form must be submitted by the nominator.)
Camp Activities/Classes include: Sustainable Forest Management, Forest Ecology, Mapping, Environmental Protection, Forest Health, Wildlife Management, Tree Identification, urban forestry and forest products demonstrations; exploratory classes in topics such as forest fire equipment and tactics, wilderness survival, canoeing, and archery; and presentations by conservation police officers, wildlife researchers, and other natural resource professionals. There is also a Lumberjack Field Day with group competition in crosscut sawing, log rolling, and other traditional outdoor skills contests. Recreation and athletics include swimming and volleyball.
